We need a new Amnesty Program
It was announced today that President Trump has decided to end President Obama’s DACA program ( Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. This program provides a level of amnesty to certain undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children. From the beginning, the legality of this program has been questioned. Both sides of the aisle can agree that this program is unconstitutional. More information on DACA can be found in the article below.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions made the rumored end of Obama’s DACA amnesty program official Tuesday.
“I’m here today to announce that the program known as DACA that was effectuated by the Obama administration is being rescinded,” Sessions said. Later calling for an “orderly and lawful wind-down.”
Regardless of your political affiliation, I believe it is essential for Congress to move forward with an amnesty bill. When DACA was established, it was designed to help kids brought to the US as children avoid being deported. Many of these children have little or no memory of living in any other country. Many hard line anti-immigration activists seem to forget this point. If you look at it without emotion, I understand constitutionality standpoint how they can come to this conclusion. However, I can not wrap my head around deporting children, who are now young adults. Many of these “Dreamers” have gone through US education programs and have contributed greatly to our society. Thousands have landed excellent jobs and have been contributing immensely to our society as a whole. These are the type of people we want to KEEP in this country.
Congress needs to draft a bill outlining a streamlined path to citizenship for the ~800k “Dreamers!”
