How accurate is Excel’s random number generation?
Since the inception of Microsoft Excel, much discussion has been given to it’s accuracy of random number generation. After compiling the RANDBETWEEN tutorial, I started thinking about random integer generation in more detail.
Based on what I have read and experienced, Excel is still falling short of generating true random numbers. Please note, I do understand that computers are not capable of providing true random numbers. True randomness implies nondeterminism. What this means is if it’s deterministic, it can be accurately predicted. As a result, if it can be predicted, it cannot be random. In my opinion, Excel needs to update their algorithms for future releases. Right now, add-ons are required to get accurate random numbers.
